Guten Abend, liebe Freunde des gewürfelten Footballs!

Es ist endlich soweit - nach fast vier Jahren sind wir auf der größten Bühne angekommen, die Football Fever zu bieten hat:

WELCOME TO FEVER BOWL IV

Doch bevor wir in die Eyebowl rüberschalten, heißen wir euch willkommen zur Pregame Show aus dem Studio des QFL Network.

Und was für ein Matchup erwartet uns heute...

Die beiden heißesten Teams - die Flash 80s und die Jetto Basterds - prallen aufeinander. Das verspricht Spannung bis in die letzten Minuten, in die letzten Sekunden vielleicht.

Da sind die Jetto Basterds. Kein Team zuvor hatte so früh in einer Saison, nämlich nach 4 Spielen, die Playoff-Teilnahme klargemacht. Und das auch noch als Expansion Franchise. Die Basterds könnten die ersten Liga-Neulinge sein, die sich den Titel des QFL World Champions holen.

Aber ihre Gegner sind mehr als formidabel. Die Flash 80s wollen die Perfect Season von duffeldoffel's Reds aus der vorherigen Saison wiederholen und dafür sorgen, dass die Bill Walsh Trophy in den Händen eines Coachs bleibt, der aus der Lüneburger Heide stammt.

Blicken wir zurück...

Jetto Basterds (5-2)

Die Jetto Basterds sind die Australian Division Champions. Sie starteten mit vier Siegen in die Saison und in ihre Teamgeschichte, bevor sie sich hinten raus zwei knappe Niederlagen leisteten, dies jedoch in einer Konstellation, die unverschämt reizvoll ist.

Aber der Reihe nach - dies war die Saison der Basterds bisher:

Es fällt auf, dass alle Spiele eng waren - kein Sieg höher als mit 8, keine Niederlage höher als mit 4 Punkten Unterschied. Die Basterds können also über 60 Minuten im Spiel bleiben und dieses dann auch gewinnen.

Und es fällt auf, dass die Basterds ihre späten Niederlagen ausgerechnet gegen ihre beiden späteren Playoff-Gegner einstecken mussten.

Dabei haben sie in den Divisionals furchbare Rache an den 'Knights genommen mit einem 41-13 Blowout. Die 'Knights waren zuvor weit oben in den Power Rankings zu finden, hatten sie doch zuvor drei Spiele in Folge gewonnen und sich noch den Titel in der Southern Division gesichert.

War das Spiel in der ersten Halbzeit noch hochspannend mit drei Führungswechseln, so zogen die Basterds im dritten Quarter furios davon und schlugen gnadenlos Kapital aus den Turnovers der 'Knights. Mit insgesamt 34 unbeantworteten Punkten nach dem letzten Führungswechsel überrollten die Basterds ihren Gegner förmlich.

Der QB der Basterds, der noch eine relativ unspektakuläre Regular Season hatte mit einer Completion Rate von 56,0 Prozent, 9 TDs bei 4 INTs und ein Rating von 79.8, hatte in den Divisionals einen Career Day mit 76,2 Prozent kompletten Pässen für 4 TDs, ohne INTs, und mit einem fast perfekten Rating von 155.0.

Der Erfolg dürfte Anlass genug zum Optimismus sein, auch gegen die Flash 80s Revanche nehmen zu können.

Blicken wir auf die Stats:

Die Basterds hatten in der Regular Season nur die siebtbeste Offense, sowohl overall als auch am Boden als auch durch die Luft. Sie verzeichneten pro Spiel insgesamt nur 254,2 yds, davon 111,8 yds durch die Luft. Aber davon lasse man sich nicht blenden: In den Divisionals gab es 302 Total Offensive Yards, 233 davon durch die Luft.

Überraschenderweise belegte auch die Defense der Basterds in der Regular Season sogar nur Platz 8 insgesamt, gegen den Lauf sogar nur den letzten Platz, und Platz 7 gegen den Pass. Und während man in der Regular Season noch 331,3 yds pro Spiel zuließ, waren es letzte Woche gegen die 'Knights auch immerhin noch 282 yds.

Aber: Die Basterds sind die Ballhawks der Liga. Mit 21 Takeaways und einem Turnover Ratio von plus-10 sowie 54 Points off Turnovers und 26 Net Points off Turnovers rangieren sie ganz vorne. Diese Zahlen begründen in erster Linie den Erfolg der Basterds. Sie gehen auf den Ball, lassen damit auch mal Raumgewinn zu, schlagen dann aber zu und nutzen jede Chance, den Ball zu klauen und gerne ihrer Offense dann auch mal ein kurzes Feld zu geben.

Nicht anders war es letzte Woche gegen die 'Knights: Aus 5 Turnovers machten sie 24 Punkte. Wenn dir so etwas gelingt, verlierst du das Spiel nicht.

Man kann davon ausgehen, dass die Basterds auch heute wieder darauf aus sein werden, Druck zu machen und Turnovers zu forcieren, um von kurzen Feldern zu profitieren.

Flash 80s (7-0)

Die Flash 80s sind die ungeschlagenen Champions der Northcentral Division. Für sie geht es heute darum, die 1972 Dolphins zu sein (oder die Season III Reds), nicht die 2007 Patriots - denn nichts wäre bitterer, als ungeschlagen ins große Finale einzuziehen und dort dann aber zu verlieren.

Aber es muss ihnen nicht bange sein, denn sie haben ungeheuere Nervenstärke bewiesen während der Saison, lagen sie doch in fünf von sechs Spielen zwischenzeitlich zurück. Gegen die Kobras wurde sogar sagenhafterweise ein 0-28 noch gedreht.

Dies war die Saison der Flash 80s bis hierhin:

Fürchten müssen sie niemanden, das haben die Flash 80s bewiesen. Sie kamen auch mit dem Druck zurecht, in den Divisionals noch einmal gegen ihren Gegner aus der Woche zuvor spielen zu müssen, da sie ja im Regular-Season Finale die Sparrows nach klarer Führung noch einmal herankommen ließen.

Und Ähnliches hätte sich auch im Divisional ereignen können, denn die Sparrows steckten auch bei 20 Punkten Rückstand nach dem dritten Quarter nicht auf und kamen eine Minute vor Schluss bis auf 6 Punkte heran. Allerdings hielten die Flash 80s auch diesmal stand und brachten den Sieg schließlich in trockene Tücher.

Auch in diesem Spiel mussten die Flash 80s einen Rückstand aufholen, dies gelang ihnen aber sehr souverän, und schon zur Halbzeit betrug der Vorsprung 10 Punkte.

Mit vier Interceptions stellten die Defenders der Flash 80s einen neuen QFL Postseason Record auf, und dazu kamen noch vier Sacks, mit denen sie immer wieder den Offensiv-Rhythmus der Sparrows unterbrachen, die durchaus nicht chancenlos waren. Sie verzeichneten am Schluss auch deutlich mehr Offensive Yards als die Flash 80s, da deren Prevent Defense am Schluss durchaus Ermüdungserscheinungen aufwies.

Ein Blick auf die Stats:

Die Offense der Flash 80s belegte einen soliden, aber unspektakulären vierten Platz insgesamt, sowie Platz drei am Boden und Platz fünf durch die Luft.

Konnte man in der Regular Season ihren QB noch mit nur 4 TDs bei 7 INTs zumindest zeitweise als Liability unter Verdacht haben, sah das im Playoff-Spiel gegen die Sparrows deutlich anders aus. Er komplettierte 66,7 Prozent seiner Pässe und warf 2 TDs bei keiner INT und hatte ein stolzes Rating von 99.3, was aber übrigens nur sein drittbestes Rating in dieser Saison gewesen ist, wenn man Regular und Postseason zusammen betrachtet.

Die Defense der Flash 80s ist freilich der Wahnsinn: Platz eins insgesamt, Platz eins gegen den Lauf, Platz eins gegen den Pass - und jeweils mit Abstand!

Zwar haben sie "nur" die drittmeisten Turnovers forciert und das fünftbeste Ratio sowie die sechstmeisten Net Points off Turnovers, aber dafür verteidigen sie solide die Räume und konzentrieren sich mehr darauf, den Ballträger zu stoppen, was sich dann auch in ihren herausragenden Sack-Zahlen und bei den Tackles-for-Loss niederschlägt.

So lässt die Defense nicht viel zu - von der Schlussphase letzte Woche vielleicht mal abgesehen -, und ihre Offense ist dann solide genug, um die notwendigen Punkte zu erzielen.

Defense wins championships, so heißt es - dass dies nicht nur eine Binsenweisheit ist, werden sie heute wieder unter Beweis stellen wollen.

Head-to-Head

Die Flash 80s und die Basterds treffen heute zum zweiten Mal aufeinander, dies hatten wir zuvor bereits angedeutet.

In Week 6 trafen sie im Basterds Theater aufeinander, und die Comeback Kids der Liga feierten direkt nach ihrer mirakulösen Wiederauferstehung gegen die Kobras gleich das nächste zweistellige Comeback.

Die Basterds lagen bis tief ins vierte Quarter hinein praktisch das ganze Spiel über in Führung, zur Halbzeit mit 13, Mitte des vierten Quarters noch mit 10 Punkten Vorsprung, aber zwei späte TDs 5:36 bzw 2:36 vor Schluss drehten das Spiel - der letzte von einem Fumble begünstigt, obwohl die Basterds auch in diesem Spiel den Turnover Battle gewannen.

Der Ref

the_hawk hat sich während der Saison als außerordentlich zuverlässiger und regelfester Ref erwiesen, weshalb ihm die prestigeträchtige Aufgabe übertragen wurde, dieses größte Spiel in der Welt des Football Fever in seinem virtuellen Stadion zu leiten.

In dieser Saison hat er die Flash 80s dreimal gerefft, logischerweise alles Siege, zuletzt das Monster-Comeback gegen die Kobras. Bei seinem Debüt als Ref am letzten Spieltag der Season III unterlagen die Flash 80s allerdings knapp den Kobras, weshalb sie damals die Playoffs verpassten.

Die Basterds stehen heute zum ersten Mal mit Ref the_hawk auf dem Feld.

Facts

Für beide Teams ist es jeweils die erste Fever Bowl. Für die Expansion Basterds sowieso, aber auch für die Flash 80s, die in ihrer erste Saison - Season III - die Playoffs noch knapp verpasst hatten.

Mit den Basterds hat sich zum ersten Mal ein #3 Seed für die Fever Bowl qualifiziert.

Da die Flash 80s den #1 Seed hatten, genießen sie das formelle Heimrecht. Bisher hat das formelle Heimteam zweimal gewonnen und einmal verloren, und zwar immer abwechselnd, so dass nach dem Gesetz der Serie diesmal das Auswärtsteam "dran" wäre.

Es ist das zweite Mal nach Fever Bowl I (Reds vs dieselz), dass es die Fever-Bowl-Paarung zuvor während der Regular Season schon einmal gegeben hat. Damals hatte der spätere Fever Bowl Champion zuvor auch das Regular-Season Game gewonnen.

Prognose

Auf der einen Seite die solide den Raum verteidigende, zuverlässig tacklende Defense, auf der anderen Seite die ultimativen Ballhawks. Dazu zwei eher unspektakuläre Offenses.

Beide Teams haben bewiesen, dass sie enge Spiele gewinnen und auch mal einen Plan B auspacken können, denn auch die Basterds haben immerhin drei Comeback Wins auf dem Konto, darunter ein 10-Punkte-Comeback gleich in ihrem Auftaktspiel gegen die billygoats.

Eine Prognose ist sehr schwer. Bei den unterschiedlichen, aber hohen Qualitäten der beiden Defenses möchte man viele Punkte nicht erwarten, aber wir alle wissen, dass es oft anders kommt.

Auf jeden Fall würde es überraschen, wenn das Spiel nicht bis ins vierte Quarter hinein offen bliebe. Wir dürfen uns auf die wahrscheinlich spannendste Fever Bowl in der QFL-Geschichte freuen.

And that's the ball game!

What an epic game by two formidable teams at the grandest stage of Football Fever we have witnessed. Five lead changes! I mean, when have we seen five lead changes in a QFL game? Just wow! Just wow! Great defensive displays by both teams as we had expected. Still, both teams racked up over 600 yds combined and totalled ten scores. Only five red-zone trips combined, though, for only one TD early in the game, the other two TDs coming from big plays... Three turnovers a piece, seven penalties a piece... A highly entertaining game. And we, as fans of the game, owe a huge thank you to both teams.

Great refereeing also, by the way. the_hawk more than justified his nomination. Thank you for that, the_hawk. And you must also be a true expert. Before the game, I predicted the Flash 80s by seven, you went with the Basterds by exactly 8, how about that! I tip my hat, my man!

And as we are nearing the trophy presentation, you really have to feel for the Flash 80s. A 7-1 season is surely a terrific, terrific achievement especially with those comeback wins they had. But when the only loss comes in the final game of the season, it's just heartbreak. (I'm sure, Tom Brady would trade two, maybe three of his rings if he could have that perfect season back.) Sure hope Kai and his dice will put their disappointment aside quickly and be proud of what they achieved. Because they have every reason to be proud. And then go again come Season V.

But here come the winners. The new QFL World Champions! The Jetto Basterds with their coach, jetto!

Die Angaben sind ohne Gewähr, da manuell erfasst.

Zwar war eigentlich kein Die wirklich schlecht, finde ich, aber wirklich in Frage kommen doch eigentlich nur zwei. Aber die Entscheidung liegt tradtionell beim Coach des siegreichen Teams.

Zwischendurch nochmal kurz mein Fazit: es war mir eine Ehre und es hat richtig Spaß gemacht, das Spiel zu reffen. Der erste Fever Bowl, der nur einen Score Unterschied aufwies (das sogar über die ganze Partie hinweg). Die starke Defense beider Teams über einen Großteil des Spiels hinweg hat mich beeindruckt, irgendwas machen meine Eagle Eyes da noch falsch ^^ So waren es letztlich (für mich gefühlt) die besseren Returns der Basterds, die ihnen häufig ein kurzes Feld und die reichlichen Field Goals beschert und das Ganze entschieden haben - aber ich will jetto bei seiner Wahl nicht beeinflussen :) Nochmal Glückwunsch an die Expansion Franchise Basterds und an Kai Kopf hoch und in Season 5 wieder angreifen!

It is the FG Die.

And here is the Fever Bowl Most Valuable Die: the Jetto Basterds' Field Goal Die!

6-for-6 on field-goal attempts - that's a Fever Bowl record!
His longest, a 50-yarder - that's a Fever Bowl record!
19 points scored overall, including his extra point - that's... NOT a Fever Bowl record. That's five points shy of the Reds' Option Die's output from Fever Bowl I.

In the divisional playoffs against the 'Knights, he went 2-for-2, that's 8-for-8 overall for the postseason, of course, plus 5-for-5 on extra points in addition to his single extra point of today.

8-for-8, by the way, that's also the highest number among those FG Dice who have maintained a perfect percentage in the QFL postseson all-time.

Regular season. 12-for-13, that's 92.3 percent. Not a QFL record but top spot for this season and actually a QFL single-season record for FG Dice with more than 7 attempts.

His two longest field goals were from 51 yds out, his only miss came from 55 yds out against the 'Knights in week 5. It was actually the Flash 80s FG Die that had the longest FGs in the regular season and also in the postseason. So, there may be even room for improvement, picture this.

But the best number striking me is actually the 18 points from his field goals today that, at least mathematically, alone would have done the job. And with this, he surely stands out in QFL Fever Bowl history.
